About Pet Food Safety News

My search for healthy pet food began almost sixteen years ago, with a tragedy that forced me to reexamine my beliefs about commercial pet food. One night, my cat Blackie came home and collapsed at my feet, unable to move. After rushing him to the vet, the veterinarian diagnosed Blackie with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder, a condition exacerbated by dry cat food. Blackie’s veterinarian stressed that he should never eat dry cat food again. That moment is what launched my research into what’s really in pet food—and what the law allows.

When I first began investigating the pet food industry, I thought I was feeding my cat the best pet food money could buy. But what I discovered during my search for the ideal pet food was a deeply troubling picture of the pet food industry. I was astounded to learn what was legally permitted in pet food.

That’s how Poisoned Pets, now Pet Food Safety News, was born.

My intention is to keep consumers informed and guide them on how to choose better pet food. You’ll stay updated on pet food recalls and safety alerts, read investigations, find out which pet food companies are getting sued, and learn how to get help when you really need it. You’ll also find guidance to help you navigate the aisle—what to look for, what to avoid, and how to make better choices.

It’s important to know that the information here isn’t based on hype – it’s based on facts. I evaluate pet food and company claims by comparing marketing promises to what laws and regulations require, and to what ingredient sourcing and enforcement records show. Unfortunately, I found systemic problems: regulatory gaps, opaque ingredient sourcing, false and misleading advertising, and inconsistent enforcement.

Today, when I look at what’s happening in the pet food market, I am hopeful. I see passionate consumers asking the tough questions that once were unasked. If you’re one of them, keep pushing: read labels critically, ask companies for clear sourcing details, and support the brands that can prove their claims. Consumers are influencing the pet food industry, encouraging pet food companies to make better choices by using better ingredients, providing clearer sourcing information, and adopting higher-welfare practices.

Sixteen years ago, there was only one company in the U.S. making human-grade pet food. Today we have choices. We have brands that are certified organic or have organic ingredients in them. We have Non-GMO Project pet food, pet food made at human-food processing facilities, and companies that are supplying transparent ingredient sourcing—sometimes right down to the farm. We have vegan pet food and some foods using alternative protein like insects. For the time in the pet food industry, we have companies that are taking animal welfare seriously, by assuring that meat and poultry are animal welfare certified (through a variety of certifiers) or Marine Stewardship Council, and this year we have the first pet food company in the U.S. that will be using ovo-sexed eggs.

My hope is that what you read here will inspire you to look past the package and make choices you can trust.

Because you love from your heart everyone in the animal, fowl, fish world, you HAVE to do this blog to expose the corruption of the industries along with the powers that be. So much chemistry, rules and regulations. So much deceit, greed and suffering. I am glad that you lighten the message, because it isn’t all bad news. You have shown us that there are caring folks out there that are learning the truth and picking up the torch.

    Mollie,

Thanks for uncovering a modern crisis foisted upon millions of unsuspecting pet lovers thinking the pet food industry is looking after the best interest of their pet’s dietary needs.
Now that I know there is no turning back.

    Hi Mollie,
“Good on ya” for researching this subject, which has spill over into human processed food, no doubt (blechh).
I was just yesterday asking a friend who is into health
topics (esp. Dr. Mercola) about ingredients as I fed my
cats (calico with eyeliner and black Persian orphan).
He mentioned roadkill, which I’d heard before, with disgust. So his solution is raw egg and sardines.
So, you’re not alone in this, keep up the good work, Jim
